2014年4月，美国20世纪福克斯公司发行了动画片《里约大冒险2》(Rio 2)，影片讲述蓝金刚鹦鹉Blu和Jewel为了寻找同类，带着三个孩子举家迁往险象丛生的亚马逊森林，在那里遭遇了一系列意想不到的事情。这部制作精良的动画片续集上映之后便获得了很好的反响和评价。该电影的主题曲 “What Is Love”也深受大众喜爱。

歌曲欢快的桑巴舞曲风格让人不由地对动画片里那个热情而奔放的地方——巴西——充满向往和幻想。歌曲的演唱者是出生于美国堪萨斯州的黑人女歌手Janelle Monáe，她用富有磁性而又俏皮的嗓音完美演绎了这首具有异域风情的歌曲。歌曲所表达的“爱”的主题也与动画片的主题相契合。爱有很多种，可以是亲人间的守护与付出，一如鹦鹉Blu为守护家族中的每一个人爆发出了惊人的勇气和力量；爱也可以跨越族群，正如影片中鸟类学家Tulio和Linda不惜一切保护鸟类；爱也意味着人类对于自然、对于动物的尊重和敬畏，正如影片传达的“保护自然，维护生态平衡”的深刻主题一样。
